The colorful and sometimes violent history of Inyo County is preserved
in the form of exhibits in the Eastern California Museum located in Independence,
California.
Special displays include Manzanar,
the Japanese-American World War II internment canter and the beautiful artistry
of basket making by the Paiute-Shoshone Tribes that inhabited this area.
Another
interesting section of the museum is an historic equipment yard. Here
agricultural implements used by early Owens Valley miners and farmer are
displayed as well as equipment used for mining and construction of the
Los Angeles Aqueduct (1908-1913).
Next to the historic equipment yard is Little Pine Village, a pioneer
settlement recreation complete wiht a general store, assay office, blacksmith
shop and other buildings from the 1880's that have been relocated to the
museum grounds.
The museum is located three blocks west of the Inyo County courthouse.
